At IDFA we're looking for a Markets Intern to join our Industry Team.

Full-time · Amsterdam

IDFA is the world’s leading institution dedicated to the art and industry of documentary film and new media. Each November, IDFA presents documentary films and new media projects to around 300.000 visitors. IDFA also organizes activities for professionals that attract around 3.000 international guest, including the two markets we are now recruiting an intern for.

Here you can watch a recap of what we did in the wider Industry team during the festival last year.

At IDFA we're looking for a Markets Intern to join our Industry Team.

Are you interested in getting insight into the business side of documentaries? Want to understand how documentary projects are financed and how new films reach audiences? We are looking for an intern to help us deliver IDFA’s services aimed at film professionals, who come to Amsterdam during the festival to do business alongside the festival in November.

IDFA’s Industry Team supports the documentary sector by providing two market services - IDFA Forum, where filmmaking teams come to find financing and production partners for films that they are developing, and Docs for Sale which is our market for completed films looking for distribution opportunities.

We are looking for an intern to join our Markets team and support in the administration of these markets leading up to the event, and to assist in the production of the markets during the festival. The position is admin-focused but with unique access into the range of documentaries currently being developed internationally, an overview of recently completed films and with plenty of opportunity to learn more about the documentary industry. You will be part of two dynamic teams of producers, with whom you will be working on delivering the market activities.

You will start by working in the IDFA Forum team with processing the application round, where you will work closely with submissions of projects that are in development or production stage and support the overall selection process. After that, you will move on to support the Docs for Sale team, where your main responsibility will be to get completed films and all materials relating to them included on our viewing platform. During the festival you will help us run the markets and their side programs.

We are keen to create active learning opportunities for our intern, with knowledge sharing on the documentary film industry and current trends relating to it. The intern will be managed by senior colleagues in the Markets team.

What are you going to do?

  • Support in processing entries in the film database for IDFA Forum and Docs for Sale.
  • Perform administrative tasks relating to these entries to make sure the projects and films are up to date in the database, and publishing information on the IDFA website.
  • Review films for the Docs for Sale catalogue in collaboration with the producers of Docs for Sale.
  • Managing visual material relating to films in Vimeo.
  • Fielding questions from professionals regarding their projects, films or their participation in events.
  • Physical production of events; making practical arrangements ahead of the markets, helping us run the events during the day and hosting industry guests.

Who are we looking for?

  • You have a great affinity with documentary cinema and are service oriented.
  • You are interested in the documentary industry and want to learn more.
  • You are nearing the end of your course of study (usually related to film), have the time to take up an internship and interested in gaining practical experience.
  • You can work well in a hectic environment and you are very organized.
  • You are creative, flexible, communicative and work well with others.
  • You don’t mind working longer hours in the weeks leading up to the festival and thrive when you’re working to several strict deadlines.
  • You are a quick learner when it comes to new software
  • You aren’t afraid of talking on the phone and you speak and write English fluently.
  • Interns from outside of the EU are welcome to apply, provided they have (or can arrange for) a student permit themselves before the start of the internship.

What are we offering?

  • A full-time internship from 25 July until 2 December 2022, exact dates to be agreed together with the selected candidate.
  • If time is needed to attend classes, we can discuss the possibilities.
  • Remuneration is € 300 per month for a full-time internship, lunch included when we are working in the office.
  • Travel expenses within the Netherlands are covered if you live outside of Amsterdam during the internship
  • Travel costs to the Netherlands and accommodation are not covered by IDFA
  • Unfortunately IDFA cannot offer assistance or financial support for getting a student or residence permit. More information can be found here.
